About the Augusta Chapter of The Links, Inc

Our Mission

The Links, Incorporated is a volunteer service organization of concerned, committed, and talented women who, linked in friendship, enhance the quality of life in the larger community.  The organization is concerned primarily with enriching sustaining and ensuring the identities, culture and economic survival of African-Americans and persons of African descent.

 

To contribute to the formulation of a positive, productive, and culturally diverse society, The Links, Incorporated also focuses on education, cultural enrichment, health and wellness and civic involvement.  This focus is implemented through strategies such as in public information and education, economic development, and public policy.

History

The Augusta (GA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was chartered on November 23, 1957.  The chapter initiators were: Sybil Carter, Effie Josey, Wilhelmina White, Dollie Russell, Neddie Harper, Margaret Barrington, Louis Laney, Annie Mae Walker, Hattie Hornsby, Manola Lockett, and Mary Alice Thomas.  The Columbia, SC Chapter served as sponsoring chapter and Link Sybil Carter was chosen as the first president. The last surviving charter member was Link Marjorie Carter.

Since the chartering in 1957, The Augusta Chapter continues to make significant contributions to the civic and cultural life of the CSRA.  Committed to the implementation of the National Program facet – The Arts, International Trends and Services, National Trends and Services, and Services to Youth – the chapter has:

  • Co-sponsored with the Augusta-Richmond County Partnership for Children and Family, a Health Fair in the South Augusta area
  • Participated in Breast Cancer and Juvenile Diabetes Walks
  • Collected Black dolls and school materials for the school children of South Africa
  • Donated business attire for the “Moving Families out of Welfare” program
  • Volunteered as deputy registrars to assist in voter registration
  • Provided workshops, dinners, and family outings for low-income families
  • Exposed young people to the arts through its Arts Explorers and Pinckney Family Arts program
  • Subsidized scholarships for Paine College, contributions to the Augusta Mini Theatre, and the United Negro College Fund

The Links, Incorporated National Chapter

The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of over 15,000 professional women of color in 288 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the United Kingdom. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.
